Budget Travel -Pawna Lake Camping
Rockstar Team explores the roads less travelled.
The journey begins:
Have a dream of camping in a tent in the lap of mother nature? Be the sky your ceiling and earth your bed. Amidst the mountains, trees, waterfalls you gaze at the sunset as if all your stress of life is disappearing with the sun.
Bounded by gigantic hills, this man-made lake situated near Lonavala is the perfect weekend destination to step into its scenic beauty. One can visit here to rejuvenate and relax your mind, body, and soul while adoring the fascinating view of the lake and the open sky. Pawna lake is a stunning and massive lake located 20 km ahead of Lonavala. It originates from the Western Ghats with a length of 58 km/ 36 miles at an elevation of 2130 ft.
There are around 80 camps in the serene beauty of Pawna lake. The packages are between 900 to 1200 per person per night. The timings are 4 in the evening to 11 AM the next morning. These packages include evening tea with snacks, Barbeque with DJ followed by delicious dinner, a tent to have a goodnight’s sleep, breakfast and tea the next morning. The distance of Pawna lake from Mumbai is 117 km and gets covered in 3 to 4 hours. The beauty of the hills covered with clouds on the ghats is inexpressible.
They reached the destination. You can walk to the beautiful lake from the tents. You will have to cross a little stream of ice-cold water, step into muck and mud, walk through the tall stems of grass and do all these gymnastics to reach the lake. But it will be worth it once you reach there and fall for its mesmerizing beauty. Viewing the sunset on the horizon of the lake is just heavenly.
After taking up the adventure, you can reward yourself with a little treat. Our favorite – barbeque time!!! Who doesn’t like freshly barbequed tender chicken? We all do.
There are waterfalls all throughout the place in the rainy season and you can have the best dip of your life.
Coming to the tents, it was placed under shade to protect it from the rains. It was just enough for 2 people. So if you are planning to go camping, do not expect luxury, look for adventure. That night it rained heavily and it seemed that our tent was going to fly off our heads. But that didn’t happen. This proved that the tents were quite sturdily fixed to the ground and it cannot happen that it will just fly off leaving you unprotected. It’s loyal that way
The next morning, all were awestruck by the beauty of the lake. The sun had just risen and was beaming light on the water and creating a layer of shine that was magical to the eyes.
After checking out from the tent, Rockstar Team headed to Tikona fort. The nearest village to Tikona fort is known as Tikona – Peth. You can get some snacks either there or at Kamshet which is the nearest town from the fort. The fort is at the height of 3500ft and requires a day’s trek to reach the top. The whole trekking journey takes about 5 hours approximately. The fort is triangular in shape thus, named as Tikona which means triangle in Hindi. The fort has the temple of ‘Trimbakeshwar Mahadev’, seven water tanks and some Satvahan caves. The trekking experience is adventurous and quite exhilarating as it is situated high up in the clouds.
HISTORY OF TIKONA FORT
Not much is known about the origins of this fort. There is a vihara on the fort datable to circa seventh-eight centuries A.D. Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I of the Nizam Shahi dynasty conquered the fort in 1585 and annexed it to the Nizam territory. In 1657, Shivaji Maharaj brought the whole of Konkan, which had been Nizam territory, under his control when he conquered Tikona along with the forts of Karnala, Lohgad, Mahuli, Songad, Tala, and Visapur.
